ok here's more! They're all of
stonehenge!!! Just a warning!
Here
is Stonehenge from the slaughter stone (the flat one lying in the ground-it
fell). There is no evidence that anyone was ever killed there, it's just a
supersticious rumor started a long time ago.
Here
is the Heel stone. When the sun rises on the midsummer solstice, and one
is standing in the center of the circle, it will appear right at the tip of this
stone!
The
most complete side of the outter sarsen circle.
preeety.
:-)
More
stones!!!!! They look a lot smaller than they really are, especially from
the distance of the fenced in walkway, but the big Sarsen stones (the ones with
the lintels on top) are on average between 4-6 feet wide...
Ok,
I hope you like these pics, cause there are a lot of them. :-) I
literally got a pic or two from EVERY angle. :-) When I pressed the
button on my camera to scroll through them, it looked like a big stone
merry-go-round spinning!!!! heehee!
gleeee!!!
squeeeeek!!!!
Here
is a good way to see the SW avenue, one of the two breaks in the outter ditch of
the circle. (it's only about 3 feet deep right now, but was origionally
deeper, with a tall mound surrounding it, covered in white chalk)
yippeee!
You
see the stone that is really tall and looks like it has a little nipple on top?
he, well that's the tallest stone in the whole structure. 22 feet
above ground, 8 feet below. The "nipple" is an example of the
kind of mortice and tennon (tennon here) joints used to hold the lintels on the
sarsen uprights. "toggle" joints held the lintels to the other
lintels, to help keep them aligned. The lintels are all slightly carved to
curve to make the circle more perfect (it's within an inch of perfect!!) and the
top was completely level. The upright sarsens are tapered at the top to
create the illusion from the inside of perfect straightness and greater height.
ok,
here's the one time I put down my camera and got out from behind it...
Better
view of the joint sarsen.
heehee!!
My dad was getting sunburned, and he didn't have his hat...so... I
just let myself burn. But it faded into a rather nice tan!!!! Well,
maybe not tan...mild flesh color really...
woohoo!
Here's
derek!! It's hard to believe we were about 30 meters away, no?
A
closeup.
Here
you can get a good peek at the Bluestone inner circle. (the littler ones)
I
think the fallen stone in the bottom left corner is the altar stone, but
I'm not totally sure. It was never really an altar probably. It was
probably standing up like the rest, but we may never know. (cue twilight
zone music)
