In Lake Tekapo, for the Observatory CafĂ©. Cute band! Even got a reflection of me in the picture. Heading off to Queenstown. Another bicyclist on the narrow shoulder. Another pretty lake. Yes, the lake really is that color. The ubiquitous i-centre, in Omarama for lunch cute poster

Typical cafe lunch - a pie! Gliders! Sue poses in front of the town statue Very brown hills!

Hay bales in a barn here. All that white is vineyards, with the grapes covered with netting to keep the birds off. The vineyards on the hills get more sun than those planted on flat ground, so the ones on slopes grow and ripen faster. But the automatic grape-picking machines can't handle any slope, so those must be hand-picked. Balance picking cost vs faster growing... Yet another pretty lake

Heading into Cromwell. Notice the fruit building up ahead. Every town has a statue or icon. Fun planes! Taildragger! Probably the glider tow plane. Local fruit stand - at a huge orchard. Yummm!!! Lookit the size of them pine cones. "Works End" - in the US we'd say "Work Ends"

Driving through the Kawarau Gorge, we stop to see the river rapids. close-up And to the right, "Roaring Meg" spouts out of the rocks. Ok it's really a building spouting, but hey it's still pretty. Two spouts!

Looking upriver Looking downriver. Aside from the color of the water and high water flow, it looks just like the Poudre Canyon at home. Looking back up, a very steep and slippery trail leads down to the water. From the water's edge.

Back on the road, close-up of the net-covered vineyards. More deer ranches. In Queenstown. There's a couple i-sites here. Remarkable View Holiday Home. The house in Queenstown, our last stop. Oh man "Remarkable View" is a true name. We park on the road above and walk down to the house. We have the whole upstairs - everything you see left to right.

From the house, steps up to the road, complete with rosebushes. Inside, the kitchen. Big enough for many more than us! From the kitchen looking down into the living room. The window up top is onto the sundeck. View out the living room window. Wow.

Going down the hallway, first bedroom on the left. Jacuzzi tub and shower. Another bedroom. Another bedroom. Another huge bathroom with walk-in shower.

Note the window on left. Even the bathroom has an incredible view. Upstairs to the sundeck, with table and bbq grill. Teeny flight of stairs... Up to a "bonus" room. Fun!

View from the sundeck is truly remarkable. There's the TSS Eanslaw vintage steamer down below. We'll see the Earnslaw later in town. It hauls tourists up and down the lake every two hours. Pretty! There was also another bathroom, plus down in the basement another bathroom and bedroom. Man this would be a ski condo for 20! Bob hacks on his laptop under the view of the lake and mountains. A couple days later, the same view out the living room window, with clouds on the mountain ranges.

Notice the snow on the mountains. The steep road down back into town. Town is at lake elevation and a mile or two to the left. Back to Friday night... after Fran made dinner (man she cooks fine!) Bob and Sue walked down the street towards town. At the dairy just down the street (baby 7-11 equivalent), cute car license. The dairy was open "9am-9pm except when All-Blacks play". Really. These guys take their rugby seriously!

Walking down towards the lake ("just a little further" kept saying Bob) pretty sailboats and we kept walking down... to find ducks! Harbor entrance marker. Sailboat across the lake.

  IM004519 IM004520 IM004521 IM004523 IM004524

Bob with duck. The other side of the lake is being built up too. In town, we were looking for parking for the next morning, and found garden golf (putt-putt). Parking garage had cool auto-pay machine. Yup they really do paragliding here. And bungee, and sky-diving, and rafting, and luge, and every other crazy sport.

  IM004525

We've seen both Salvation Army and Red Cross here, in the bigger towns.
