SQL History
Originally developed in the 1960's and 1970's
“A Relational Model of Data for Large Shared Data Banks” by Edgar F. Codd
ANSI standardized in 1986, ISO in 1987
Originally called SEQUEL (Structured English Query Language)
Renamed to SQL to avoid a prior trademark
Notes:
Officially SQL is not an acronym and doesn't stand for anything.
Pronounced “sequel” or “s, q, l”? Either. Both. Doesn't matter.
If it looks like SQL is old and had an old syntax that is only because it is old and has an old syntax.
Standard? Ha! Lots of variations for vendor lock-in.
