A transformer on the power pole in Saigon, never saw these in Cambodia. We are taking an early morning van ride to the river. We're about to head down to this river to see the "Floating Market". We slide past another boat. We hop onto a boat just like this one and head downstream a bit. Lots of older ladies with traditional hat and garb, alone on a boat man-handling the engine around. Both buying and selling.

These two smaller boats converge onto the larger one... Hook on, and buy and sell. As always, the yellow flowers for luck during Chinese New Year, on the bow of the boat. Each boat selling anything has a pole up advertising what it's selling by simply attaching a few to the pole. Simple way to advertise your wares!

Every boat we see has bright eyes painted on the front. I think it is potatos for sale on this boat. I think there is a lot of old fashioned social conversation too. Props up in the air - these are anchored while they are selling. Selling potatoes.

The river seemed full of boats to us, but our guide said it was very quiet because of CNY, that normally there would be many more boats selling and buying. A small boat selling coffee pulled alongside ours and sold a couple cups of coffee to our group. She also sold other drinks. She made each cup to order, with mllk/sugar included.

She then unhooks her boat from ours and heads off to the next tourist boat to sell more coffee. Selling pumpkins. Boat engine exposed. OSHA would have a fit :-) Scale for weighing items for sale.

Pineapple for sale. Pineapples are piled high on the boat's bow. Another boat pulls up to us to sell to us. She's selling satays, meat on a stick. Good satay.

All the tourist boats are being wined and dined. Lady selling satays heads out to the next tourist boat. She's doing all the navigating, cooking etc alone. Next we hook up to a bigger boat selling fruit and veggies.

All sorts of produce for sale. And a cute well-fed dog on board. They live on this boat - tv, radio, clothes. Bob pets the cute dog :-) Also on board, birds in cages.

Our boat driver, like others is always on his smart phone, with the usual yellow flowers on his boat for good luck. Everybody gets pictures of the cute dog. Our guide tells us usually there would be like 5x more boats here if not for the holidays. Seems crowded already to me. Houses on the riverbank sell items too.

Lumberyard on the river bank. Guys on top show how high the logs are piled. TV antenna on a mast with clothes hanging to dry. A true live aboard boat. These boats are empty of cargo but people are still living aboard them. Crane for loading and unloading boats.

Floating gas station. Selling fuel to the boats, and again the yellow or gold flowers for prosperity. HUGE logs. More lumber. Cell phone antennas in the background. Another floating gas station. Interesting enclosed boat.

Very typical, old lady with the traditional hat, ferrying a passenger. The tourists in life jackets taking pictures while the old lady is driving the boat. Another small boat. The large riverboat gambling ships we saw lit up last night. The bridge we walked over last night, unlit now.

Suspension bridge in Can Tho. Passing the pedestrian bridge on the way back to our hotel for breakfast. This hotel has both regular sugar and brown sugar packets on the breakfast table! And an interesting container and spoon for salt and pepper. After hotel checkout, we're about to hop on the van again to transfer to Saigon. But in the middle of the picture...

A water buffalo is tethered, just grazing. In the middle of the city. Dan stretches out in the van :-) "Happy Chinese New Year" Crossing more rivers on the way to Ho Chi Minh City. No ferries now, many cars on the roads. Ouch, bus collision.

Two buses had collided :-( Lots of signs and decorations for Chinese New Year and Tet day Lunch in Ho Chi Minh City. Even the Pepsi can is decorated for CNY. For George. More CNY decorations. We're now on a walking tour of town.

Everywhere. Independence Palace - also known as Reunification Palace It was the home and workplace of the President of South Vietnam during the Vietnam War. It was the site of the end of the Vietnam War during the Fall of Saigon on April 30, 1975, when a North Vietnamese Army tank crashed through its gates. More decorations. Badminton court, drawn on the sidewalk in this park.

Notre Dame Cathedral in Ho Chi Minh City. Built by the French. The only decoration on the church, a sign for CNY. Statue in front of the cathedral. Post office, another cool architecture built by the French.

  IMG_1619 IMG_1621 IMG_1622 IMG_1623 IMG_1625

Everywhere, stuff for sale. These are cool pop-up cards that fold down to gift card size. Interior of the post office is designed to look like a train station. Map of south Viernam and the Nine Dragons Delta aka Mekong Delta. Here a huge picture instead of a statue.

  IMG_1626 IMG_1627 IMG_1628 IMG_1629 IMG_1630

Cute critters for sale. Welded together fanciful beasts. Ole and Lisa stop to read some of the posters talking about why Ho Chi Minh City is so awesome. All the government signs and propaganda call it HCMC. All the locals call it Saigon. Street sweeper with a home-made broom.

  IMG_1631 IMG_1632 IMG_1633 IMG_1634 IMG_1635

The broom designs differed in all the countries. More CNY banners. And Vietnam flags over the banner. Ole and Win Joint construction project with Japan. Surprising. One of the locals said they needed the quality.

  IMG_1639 DSCN8381 DSCN8382 IMG_1640

Pho is accompanied by optional additions - spicy sauce, limes, chilis, basil. Stall of the Pho vendor. Vendor does her dishes on the street. Plenty of seating, if very low and child-sized.
